More 'SNL' cast shakeups: Melissa Villaseñor, Alex Moffat, Aristotle Athari exit

USA TODAY has heard that the cast members Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseor, and Aristotle Athari won't be returning to the long-running sketch comedy series this autumn as it enters its 48th season.

Three months have passed since the Season 47 finale in May, when Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, Pete Davidson, and Kyle Mooney announced their departures.

The alterations were made by executive producer Lorne Michaels as he this week conducted tryouts for new cast members who might appear on the show when it resumes in early October.

Moffat joined "SNL" in 2016 as a featured performer and was elevated to main cast member in 2018.

The Chicago native rose to fame on Weekend Update by portraying Eric Trump and a "Guy Who Just Bought a Boat."

Next up for him is the Apple TV+ comedy "Bad Monkey," starring Michelle Monaghan and Vince Vaughn.

Villaseor, who was remembered for his memorable impersonations of celebrities like Lady Gaga and Dolly Parton, was also elevated to a regular player in 2018 after two years on the programme.

She has vast experience working in animation outside of "SNL," having voiced characters in "Toy Story 4," "Q-Force," and "Adventure Time" on Cartoon Network.
